The monks visited Unity Church in Buffalo, NY to perform and share the sacred ceremony, Lama Chopa, through The Mystical Arts of Tibet. The Buddhist monks travel to raise awareness about Tibetan tradition, the history and hardship of their culture in Tibet and India, to secure educational funding, and to acquire sponsorship for individual monks. The only support for the continuation of all of this is through donations, sale of handmade items by Tibetan refugees and the kindness of communities, business and organizations. Buffalo/Rustbelt Episode of A. Bourdain: No Reservations

Buffalo Business Receives National Recognition: President’s Volunteer Service Awards

In July of 2009, Susan Marie Public Relations was certified as a business that continues to support faith based, organizational and community related events through her volunteer service over a two year span. A Certifying Organization is an entity that is approved to review and verify a volunteer’s hours, and nominate and distribute the President’s Volunteer Service Awards. COs are oftentimes, local offices, chapters, affiliates, offices, stores, or member organizations that operate under the auspices of a national Leadership Organization.

The Corporation for National and Community Service was formed to engage Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service to meet community needs. Each year, more than 1.5 million individuals of all ages and backgrounds help meet local needs through a wide array of service opportunities. These include projects in education, the environment, public safety, homeland security and other critical areas through the Corporation's three major programs: Senior Corps, AmeriCorps, and Learn and Serve America.

Certifying Organizations agree to perform the following roles:

LOCKPORT — Arguably, Our Lady Peace was the most anticipated concert in this year’s Molson Canal Concert Series and one of the main reasons so many people I have spoken to comment on how great this year’s lineup is. OLP arrived in Lockport to kick off a major tour in support of their forthcoming “Burn Burn,” which will be released July 21.

Highlighting new material is often a challenge for artists because many concertgoers only want to hear familiar songs, but OLP did a masterful job blending the old with the new. Of course, they had an audience that most bands could only pray for. If there were such a thing as a sell-out crowd for a free show, then OLP played to one.

They hit the stage at 8:40 p.m. and upon seeing the massive crowd, lead singer Raine Maida said, “ Oh my God, I think we’re in heaven,” after which the band opened with an updated version of “Naveed,” the title cut from its first album. Next was an extended version of “Superman’s Dead,” from their second album “Clumsy,” during which Maida urged the crowd to sing along and the massive crowd obliged.

It did not take long for even the casual fan to realize this was a special night for OLP. Standing in front of a backdrop displaying the cover of “Burn Burn,” OLP hardly seemed like a band that has played fewer than half a dozen shows in the past three years. New songs like “Monkey Brains” and “Paper Moon” were only distinguishable because the majority of crowd was not loudly singing every word of them.

A person standing near me remarked that OLP was “the best band ever to play Lockport,” a heady claim, considering the talent that has come through the area. I will say that OLP was one of the most polished bands I have seen in many years. Raine Maida is the consummate front man, combining vocal prowess and showmanship that is truly sublime.

OLP closed their set with “All You Did Was Save My Life,” a new track from “Burn Burn” that has been available on the Internet for the past few weeks. Closing with a new song was a bold move, but it worked because of the strength of the song.

The band returned the stage playing three encores, closing with a rousing version of “Starseed,” during which Maida jumped into the crowd.

Raine Maida gave a tremendous performance, and he undoubtedly did not disappoint the many fans in attendance. Nonetheless, it is important to note the work of the rest of the band, including Steve Mazur, the guitarist, who did not miss a note, and the flawless rhythm section consisting of Jeremy Taggart on drums and Duncan Coutts on bass.

Right before I left the show, a person said to me, “You better write a good review of this show.” A good show deserves a good review and OLP certainly deserves a good review after tonight. Before I left, I thanked Mayor Tucker for bringing these shows to Lockport. Two weeks, two excellent shows.

Floozie: See You Later (Buffalo, NY)

Floozie is fully experienced by their live, raw performances, yet on their 2009 release, " See You Later", they redefine that untamed freedom found in the current Western New York indie scene.

Floozie is: Jim Schwartz: Vocals and Guitar, Marty Schebell: Bass, Mike McGranor: Lead Guitar/Vocals and Mr. Sam: Percussion. Selling out auditoriums, Floozie has shared the stage with: Sponge, Theory of a Dead Man, Default, The Trews, and Soul Asylum. The richness of Floozie's lyrics, mean guitar riffs and folklore behind various songs, crowned them with notoriety of being experimental and influential.

"Holding On For Nothing" slams you head first into dirty riffs with alternating echo chamber vocals: "I always try to sort it out / but find myself full of doubt / I'm holding on for nothing /and I'm begging you please / can't you see the scrapes on my knees." This tune is punk, blues, funk, and rock and roll all in one.

The eclectic diversity of "See You Later" is found on, "Electric." The intro is pure driven punk: "You're electric / so let me turn you on", interspersed with harmonica and blues. "You never know what you might find / all you gotta do / all you gotta do / is open up your eyes." Keeping true to harmony through guitars and driving percussion, "Electric" alternates between pop and blues.

"Whatchya Say", features slide. Imagine a track screaming: "Whatchya say/ What your saying / What your sayings not me" with mad precision on percussion, guitars and vocals simultaneous. Musically, "Whatchya Say" is one of those "must see live" Floozie tunes.

This album is proof that Floozie yet again comes out with something uninhibited, meaty and passionate. Lyrically, melodically and instrumentally, you get a taste of punk, blues, rock and roll, and pop in one album. Floozie can be reached at myspace. Floozie is on rotation at 97 Rock, 103.3 The Edge, 107.7 The Lake (with an interview) and were named 97 Rock's Artist of the Month. The first track, "Holding On For Nothing" is irony at best. Floozie fans have been holding on, yet most certainly not for nothing.

Joanna Mosca: Just Keep Going (Live audio/review) NYC

Joanna Mosca, multi-genre artist, with three acclaimed one woman shows in New York City under her belt, is in the final stages of introducing to the world her first independent unreleased CD, yet to be titled, in fall 2009. Joanna has collaborated with Jay Levine and Grammy award winning producers Tyrone Corbett and Robert Donsella.

Nashville, The Grand Ole Opry and the top ten adult contemporary hits on The Friday Morning Quarterback Album Report are several of her merits. Joanna embraces music wholeheartedly, similar to when she were studying to be an actress with Anthony Hopkins and Uta Hagen in Greenwich Village at HB Studios.

Her autobiographical track, "Just Keep Going", resonates with the world today: difficult economic times coupled with Joanna's own life experience. The song begins with subtle guitar combined with inviting vocals, "Am I followin' the path I am supposed to follow?" The chorus rises with: "I will light the pathway / when its too dark to see / I will flow with the river / if it feels good for me / I will climb the mountain / thats in front of me / when I'm on my own / when I'm all alone / I keep on going . . ." This is an anthem of faith and dedication to self.

"A Good Distraction", neo country melded with pop and jazz, intros with a mean guitar. This was written during Joanna's experience during the inauguration. An acquaintance's comment about a passerby compelled Joanna to run with that line, producing this playful tune about everyone needing a good distraction.

"The Little Things", is pristine, delicate piano leading Joanna into: "Everything he does is like a movie made for me / on the big screen" This is where diversity shines with slide, piano, vocal range, and lyrics. She is paying homage to the things in life we often over look. The little things in life that truly matter.

Joanna Mosca is versatile. She manages to incorporate all of her creativity into this new album. Joanna is involved with "I Have A Dream", "The Million Mom March", and "Child Reach." She speaks of giving back: "Most artists wait 'till they're rich and famous before giving back and contributing to charitable causes." Mystical Arts of Tibet: Unity Church July 2nd: Visiting Tibetan Monks

Lama Chopa: Sacred ceremony shared by Tibetan Monks from Drepung Loseling Monastery

On July 2, 2009, 7pm, Unity Church (1243 Delaware Ave. Buffalo, NY (716) 882-0391) will be hosting Tibetan Monks from Drepung Loseling Monastery to celebrate the Lama Chopa sacred ceremony.

Lama Chopa is perhaps the most popular practice in Tibetan Tantric world. It is traditionally performed on auspicious occasions for invoking the blessings of the enlightened masters for individual, communal, and environment healing. The ceremony involves chants, traditional musical instruments, and various offerings of light food and flowers. This practice was composed by the First Panchen Lama, Lobsang Chokyi Gyaltsen. The First Panchen Lama was the guru of the Fifth Dalai Lama, and perhaps the singularly most popular figure in seventeenth century Tibet. Today it is perhaps even more popular than ever, serving as something of a symbol of the endangered Tibetan civilization.

Do you know why I say No Excuses? Because I did an MS Walk last month and severely disabled people walked further than I did, it humbled me immensely. Did I feel guilty? No, I did not. However, it woke me up to the FACT that I am BLESSED and it filled me with pride for the STRENGTH of the people who in my eyes have a difficult life, yet in their eyes, it is business as usual. Life humbles me every single day and makes me grateful for everything around me, including you. Am I laying a guilt trip on you right now? No. I would never do that. I am simply asking you to help.

We all have to work, go to school, have children, are sick and have stuff we have to take care of. Bring your family, friends, parents, pets, make this an incentive if you are an employer, if you are a business, please drop off some food, the musicians need to eat and drink too, stop over on your lunch hour and listen to local musicians who are doing this for free, donate time, volunteer the day of, perform in this event, stop by anyplace that has food or go into your own cupboard (you know you have cans of peas, cranberries and Ramen soup hiding in there and if you don't you are either one of the hungry I speak of or you have never really been truly hungry) as I have and bring some non perishable food downtown to support the Food Bank of Western New York. They will have a truck on site 25 hours.

If you cannot sleep at 2am and drive to the nearest NOCO to get a whopper extra caffeine and a milky way or a tub of ice cream, grab a canned good or ten, its about a buck each, then KEEP DRIVING to CITY HALL, where there will be live free music.

If you are up at 6am on Tuesday morning before work, grab non perishable foods first then GO HERE. If you get out of work and have to grab the kids or family, go BACK downtown, it will be SUNNY out. (Mon: sunny 79 degrees, Tues: sunny 80 degrees) then go to the Erie Basin Marina, or the library . . . make a day of it. If you live no where by the city then why haven't you been there yet? GO. Buffalo is full of treasures.

If you have no gas money, carpool, take the bus, bike it, roller blade, it's healthy.

Teach your children what it means to give so the madness in this world ceases with their generation.

Without the support of The Food Bank, the churches, chapels, pantries, food banks, missions, and all the children's activities will have NO FOOD. What does this mean if the Food Bank is not supported? It means that people will NOT BE ABLE TO EAT.

If you need their services and I know I have, they just might not be there anymore. What does that mean? That eventually, we all starve. I do not want to hear any excuses at all, because there isn't one that would fly with me and I am being frank here because this is important to me - it's OUR city, the people in OUR city and I am tired of people wishing change yet staying complacent.

Here is something ---> so change the world!

Bring some food, listen to music, toss some change in a guitar case but please, please . . . just go. It's 25 hours.

Don't forget to bring some food. You will hear great FREE music, in an uncrowded atmosphere, meet amazing people, possibly walk away with a new idea for a project and think of what you would be handing down to your children.

Man, we cannot make the world perfect, but we sure can strive towards a positive goal together.

Our Lady Peace: Burn Burn - Live Interview With Raine Maida

In 2009, Our Lady Peace produced their seventh album, Burn Burn released on Warner Music's Independent Label Group. 10 tracks will be available on July 21st, 2009. This album is their first since 2005, self produced by the band at Raine's home studio in L.A. Our Lady Peace surpassed Platinum sales status in Canada, sold over 5 million albums worldwide, won four Juno awards, The Much Music Awards and have shared the stage with Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, The Rolling Stones, Van Halen, Faith No More, The Goo Goo Dolls, The Ramones, Stone Temple Pilots and Alanis Morrisette.

Our Lady Peace is: Raine Maida: vocals, lyricist, Duncan Coutts: bass, Jeremy Taggart: percussion, and Steve Mazur: guitar.

For years, music has been lacking acoustics, raw vocals, live instruments and pure driven rock and roll. The days of full bands performing with energy directed to the crowd, have been long gone. The monotonous subjection to the business of music and its lack of knowledge and experience with the subterranean has forced fans, as well as musicians, to revert to what they already know and like. Burn Burn is proof that music is indeed, still alive and thriving.

"I'm not for sale / but I've been sold", anthemic lyrics from the first track, All You Did Was Save My Life, intros Steve's aesthetic guitar to Raine on vocals, "You looked at me as you walked in the room / like a Red Sea you split me open / somehow knew these wings were stolen / All You Did Was Save My Life." The tune progresses with the addition of Jeremy, then Duncan, in brash harmony with "I'm not dying." All You Did Was Save My Life is an introspective self realization.

Dreamland is reminiscent of mid 90's sublime (the definition, not the band) interspersed with extreme positivity that can only be gleaned from being thrust into a world where morals and ethics are oftentimes difficult to maintain. Raine pleas: "In this dreamland the kids are alright / and the sky is blue / we all got wings / and know how to fly / I'm headed to the moon / the sun on my face / my head in the clouds / time on my side / my feet off the ground . . . I'm not comin' down."

Paper Moon is delicate elegance. Steve scorches throughout the track, as surreal as Raine's hypnotic vocal range: "I was thinking if you know a way out / then I'd like to go with you / and we can burn out like candles / under that paper moon / . . . they just don't know anything at all" All four of them (Raine, Duncan, Jeremy and Steve) annihilate the idealism of what "music" is today, bringing it right back to what works: simplicity. Raine ends: "There's a time that you get turned around / life itself just wears you out / you keep getting ready for that big parade." This tune is one for the stadiums.

Music In Action: Be True - Be You June 22-23rd 2009 Niagara Square

In 2006, Bob James, Buffalo High School Students and Robby Takac of The Goo Goo Dolls began a program focused on youth leadership, music business skills and mentored training by industry professionals. The result of this program was the first Music Is Action CD, entitled: Be True, Be You.

Visiting professionals such as: Erin Roberts of The Juliet Dagger, Grammy - nominated producer, Anthony Casuccio, Biff Henrich and Grammy - winning designer from Brian Gunnert, teamed with Buffalo Public School #187 (Buffalo Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts) to select artists out of 54 demos received to create a CD. The above team asked the submitting artists to fit the cause message: Be True, Be You.

Recording took place at Trackmaster Studios and Bob James' Cabin 5 Studio in Buffalo, NY. Several songs were selected and musical contributions were added by Robby Takac, Bob James, and Howard Wilson. The CD was released on GCR Records with a grassroots, anti - peer pressure call to action. Sales from this CD benefit H.E.A.R.T for Mental Health, serving Western New York Schools and features Grace Stumberg's original: Change The World.

The second Music In Action CD: Band: u pluribus unum, was released in 2008 featuring Buffalo Select Chorus. This CD was a collaboration with Buffalo Public Schools, Leadership Niagara and Lockport High School. Year two of Music is Action formed what is now - Music Is Art. The second CD proved to be successful and five common threads were discovered: Music is therapy before it becomes a career opportunity, loving and sharing music is simple; yet making music a business is complex and challenging, students and adults are looking for new ways to learn, everyone wishes to be included when it matters; but that is not always possible and the bigger vision survives when the little invisible details get covered.

Students featured on both CD's include: Grace Stumberg, Mar, Kev & Friends, Becca Montijo, Mar & Louch Productions, Ymaris Baez, Anthony Taylor, Vanessa Brown, Bethany Fonda, Miss.Interpretation, Jackie Perry, Dashuri, Marquez & Kalvin, Not Too Sure, Dan Covey, Annabelle & Zoe, and Buffalo Select Chorus.

On June 22 and 23rd, in Niagara Square, various students from both CD's, as well as many of the team members involved formed a new vision - Tunes4food. This is a 25 hour free event hosted by Buffalo musicians. This is continuous in Niagara Square, Buffalo, NY from 11am on June 22 to 1pm on June 23rd. The event is in support of The Food Bank of Western New York to aid hunger issues not only in Western New York, but all of America.

The mission statement behind this event is simple. Do what you say you will do. Please join our local artists, producers, students and community for two beautiful days in the city. A Food Bank truck will be on site for donations of canned goods and non perishable food items. Bring your pets, friends, family and children. Like the students and professionals above, the message behind both CD compilations is similar with Tunes4Food: It's a message of unity, but more a team or community sense than musical.

Buffalo Musicians Host 25 Hour Food Bank Event

On June 22, 2009 at 12 noon at the steps of City Hall, Niagara Square, Buffalo musicians are tackling hunger issues on a grassroots level by providing a 25 hour FREE concert titled: Tunes4food. This event, that runs 25 hours straight, is in direct support of The Food Bank of Western New York.

Everyone faces tough challenges today, yet there is hope with the formation of a growing alliance hosted by student graduates of ‘Music in Action’ (an educational program sponsored by the local nonprofit, Music is Art), mentored by members of the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame, and Bob James, Director of Student Voices (a state-certified student leadership trainer).

ANYONE can join the “alliance” to support the event. All you need to do is promise to help spread the word and bring food to get your organization’s link on the website.

"A main message in Music in Action’s training is – ‘If you want to distinguish yourself from the crowd, just do what you say you will do. Keep the promises you make’", said James. "President Obama addressed the nation in the same manner speaking of grassroots community based service projects." Bob James, veteran of local groups such as The Restless, The Rain, Third Floor Strangers, Big Happy Family, and Ministers of Love, has used music to reach people in creative ways. His past projects include: This Is It – Greater Buffalo's Greatest 1977-1984 compilation CD's, War Is Over – musicians united for safe schools, Buffalo Classic Rock CD benefit for Music is Art, and Music In Action - a school based business curriculum co-authored with Robby Takac (Goo Goo Dolls & Music is Art).

Bob James went on to say that several Music In Action students have stayed connected to us since graduation, wanting more support and direction – like continuing education. “Students get inspired by our training module on ‘music activism’ and when I saw a recent news story on how the Food Bank is getting more calls these days, it all just clicked – ‘tunes4food’”, James continued. “And since I have been helping the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame develop an after-school program, their participation seemed a natural fit, knowing that veteran musicians would add decades of career skills and wisdom about activism – going back to the 1960’s.”

Buffalo Select Chorus: Babeville: June 3, 2009

On June 3, 2009 7:30pm at Asbury Hall (Babeville), 341 Delaware Ave Buffalo, NY, Buffalo Select Chorus will host its 4th annual concert with a recording of their new CD. This is FREE and open to the public with a reception to follow.

Directed by Linda Appleby, Buffalo Select Chorus has been performing since 2005 for diverse Western New York audiences. The Chorus consists of Buffalo Public School students specializing in: gospel, jazz, classical, blues, baroque, chamber music and contemporary.

Linda Appleby, awarded "Linda Appleby Day" by City of Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown at the 2008 performance, is immensely dedicated to her students. Her vision began as having a dynamic chorus of students from all of the Buffalo Public High Schools to perform a mixed repertoire of music to provide professional recordings for the students college applications. She has gone far and beyond that vision with 4 CD's produced as of 2009. Linda has given the students opportunity to expand their vocal skills with certified music teachers and professional musicians.

This years special guest is Joseph Wooten, "The Hands of Soul." Wooten is the fourth brother of the quintet "The Wooten Brothers". He began organ at six and grew up playing music and opening for the likes of Curtis Mayfield, War and Stephanie Mills. Currently he tours with The Steve Miller Band, and his brother Victor Wooten.

Noa Bursie: Familiar Addiction (NY)

In 2008, Noa Bursie recorded her 2nd CD, "Familiar Addiction", at Audio Magic Studios in Buffalo, New York. Vocalist, lyricist, guitarist, and testimony defining true art, Bursie melds all genres of music on this 13 track CD.

"Familiar Addiction" features a cavalcade of fine musicians: Jerry Livingston, John Bacon, Jr, Wendell Rivera, Ron LoCurto, Frank Grizanti, Emile Latimer, Mary Ramsey, Paul Kneis, Ken Kaufmann, Jim Whitford, Kevin Hall, Jim Bohm and Sparky (the Tibetan Monk chant on the track, "Familiar Addiction.")

"Faith Fiction", showcases Noa's gift as a lyricist within the chorus: "Grace and favor, faith and fiction, it all comes down to mercy. Mercy, mercy . . . .sweet mercy. Grant me the will to believe. Unlock this prison let me feel the faith of my fathers and . . . I will fall down on my knees, speak to me in the language of redemption, I shall be free."

"Letting go now . . . made up my mind", finds Bursie, beautifully haunting vocals, embracing the past while standing in the present. "Weightless" is one of those tunes you drive to and play over again.

"Altitudes" is a masterpiece. The guitars, all around, are impeccable, beyond perfection, as well as Noa's vocals. "Falling, falling, falling, you'd think we'd understand our plight. We're all just fools in flight, steady losing altitude, and not saving another soul in sight, but were flying still." "Altitudes" has that bluesy, brassy flavor of Hendrix and Joplin.

Buffalo Marathon for Cantor Susan Wehle: Flight 3407

On, May 24, 2009, Parker Gevirtzman, member of Temple Sinai, will run the 26 mile Buffalo Marathon in memory of Cantor Susan Wehle, who died in the crash of Continental Flight 3407 on February 12, 2009. This is his special gift to Susan, who was Cantor at Temple Sinai for 9 years, previous to her position as Cantor at Temple Beth Am.

Parker would like all pledges for his run to be sent to Temple Sinai, in memory of Susan Wehle. All funds will go to the "Etz Chayim" Torah Restoration Fund.

Cantor Susan Wehle loved her Judaism and the restoration of a Torah is a very appropriate way in which to honor her memory. Parker is an experienced marathon runner.

He has made this effort a focus of his life right now, and even posted his cause on "Facebook", urging the general public to contribute to this endeavor. As of this writing, 270 individuals and groups have pledged to support Parker in his run to remember Susan, including The Counseling Center of WNY and Terrie's Workout Center.

NOMAD Literary/Art Magazine: Print Release Thursday May 14 at Merge

NOMAD, Buffalo's Newest Art & Literary Magazine will be holding its debut release on May 14th at Merge Restaurant, 439 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo NY at 7pm. Editor of Nomad Magazine, Erica Eichelkraut, accepted works and pieces from Buffalo artists to display in the first issue. An online version will feature ad space, sponsorships and artist information after the print release on Thursday. The magazine itself will be distributed at Merge Restaurant. Buffalo Premiere of the Award Winning film "Poundcake"

On May 7th, 2009, in conjunction with The Buffalo Niagara Film Festival, the award winning film, "Poundcake" will premiere at The Market Arcade, 639 Main St, Buffalo, NY 14203 at 7pm. "Poundcake", filmed in Buffalo, stars Academy Award Nominee Kathleen Quinlan and Jay O. Sanders. Directed by Rafael Monserrate, the screenplay is written by Buffalo native, Kevin Logie and Troy Hall.

Set in Buffalo during the late 80's, the film focuses on a rare evening spent gathering friends and family (eclectic in nature) of the main characters (Cliff and Carol), to make a devastating announcement after thirty years of marriage on Thanksgiving. Unsuspecting, everyone is then invited to an area Chinese restaurant, (The Golden Buddha), for their last "civilized" meal together.

Elizabeth Mariani: imaginary poems for my imaginary girlfriend named anabel

Elizabeth Mariani published her first volume of poetry in 2008 by Semperverdi press, entitled, "imaginary poems for my imaginary girlfriend named anabel." Earning a B.A. in American Studies, with a Concentration in Cross Cultural Studies from The University at Buffalo; Elizabeth has been a dynamic force during the rise of the poetry scene in Western New York. This 28 page volume is proof of her dedication to the written word.

The highlight of this volume can be found on page 25 where Elizabeth describes her focus for this entry: "tatiana: the siberian tiger who escaped from her open air cage in the san francisco zoo on December 25, 2007. she killed one human and injured two others. this is a story about tatiana and anabel, my imaginary girlfriend."

Elizabeth writes: "anabel and tatiana / made a pact / anabel said / to tatiana /over air and space / energy wind / and friend face / the bosom buddies / of different species / made a blood red saffron pulse / of a jugular country road pothole / slow down for the turn pact."

In this piece, Ms. Mariani manages to bring the the tiger (tatiana) caged then escaped, joined by an imaginary girlfriend, (anabel), together into their own realm. There is a melding of similarity between different species, that can be compared to present culture. The two embark on a private journey, away from media that wishes to cover the story of the tiger who has killed, away from the police and the reporters, into a childlike dream state existing purely for tatiana and anabel.

Tatiana and anabel escape into a reality of their choosing, one most of us recognize, to view the world through the eyes of a child and an animal. Through metaphor, this text causes one to understand why the tiger escaped, why the animal should not be caged and why this girlfriend, although imaginary, likens to the tiger. Tatiana too, feels outcast, as the tiger, blamed for its instinct, judged for being an animal. Caged as humans often are, emotionally, intellectually, and spiritually; this piece focuses on the world today. The need to regain self and to look within and beyond the paparazzi that so often muddles the truth.

This is apparent in the lines: "how could it be / said lawyer a to lawyer b / that zoo animals / insist on being free / how can it be / said reporter a to reporter c / that reporter b / is too scared to write / what he sees." Elizabeth continues: "and tigers reaching / for natural terrain / reject the notoriety / and the fame / of the living / of the living mammal / caged for cuteness."

Elizabeth Mariani is an avid supporter of Human and Civil Rights, The Environment and Art in every genre. Her volume of poetry speaks of her own experience, told through the vision of a woman. Dining Out For Abruzzo: Italian Earthquake Fund

For Immediate Release: (Buffalo, NY) - Peter Longo, President of The Western New York Chapter of Restaurant Association, in conjunction with Dennis Di Paolo of Ilio Di Paolo's Restaurant, and Italy's Honorary Buffalo Vice Consul, Lucia Caracci Cullens, announce a press conference to be held on Monday, April 20, 2009 at Ilio Di Paolo's Restaurant, 3785 South Park Avenue, Blasdell, NY at 3:30pm.

The conference will announce the local food service response, "Dining Out For Abruzzo", to support the victims and families from the recent earthquake in the region of Abruzzi, Italy. This region is the ancestral birthplace of numerous members of Western New York's food service community and the legendary Italian wrestler and restaurateur, Ilio Di Paolo. On April 25, 2009 at St. Anthony's Church in Buffalo, there will be a memorial service to be announced.

The Western New York Community has established itself with numerous people of Italian descent and operators of pasta and pizza houses throughout Western New York. ALL food service establishments are invited to participate in this endeavor. A portion of receipts are asking to be donated in support of "The Italian Earthquake Fund" on dinners purchased by the general public on the evening of Thursday May 7, 2009.

Music is Art Fundraiser: The Irish Center

On May 8, 2009, from 7pm to midnight, a fundraiser to benefit "Music is Art" will be held at The Buffalo Irish Center 245 Abbott Road, Buffalo, NY 14220. This will be an evening of outstanding and diverse entertainment from rock to jazz, fusion and hip-hop. The performers include local musicians: Type Relevant, Free Henry!, Shameflute, and The John Hunter Trio along with Rochester's own, Subsoil and Reece Q.

Music is Art is a not for profit 501c3 organization founded in 2004 by Goo Goo Dolls bassist and Buffalo native Robby Takac. Music is Art operates through a board of directors, staff, partner organizations, sponsors, and various volunteers. This organization enlightens and ignites a personal connection to the artistic merit and acceptance of all forms of music. Music is Art explores and reshapes music’s cultural, social, and educational impact on our community.

Type Relevant is a powerhouse trio that impresses a wide range of crowds with a blend of jazz, funk, blues, and hip-hop. Formed in 1999 featuring Brian Herlihy (Relevant) on bass, guitars, and vocals, along with John Hunter (TypeNice) on drums, their first shows were in 2000 in South Buffalo and Downtown Buffalo. Tom Bolton: When I Cross The River (Australia)

In 2007, Tom Bolton recorded "when I cross the river" at Stranger and Walpole Streets, Triangles at Moroney and various locations in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Written by Tom, this double CD has 11 tracks with a bonus track on the 2nd CD entitled" Biscuits."

Tom Bolton has been a lyricist for over thirty years and it is apparent on this compilation.
"when I cross the river" features: Tom Bolton: acoustic guitar and vocals, Richard Grace: double bass, and Jeremy P. Martin: "a whole bunch of stuff." This double disc is a journey into folk tradition laden with rock and roll, poetry, acoustics, and harmonics.

The title track, "when I cross the river" is a heartfelt rendering that can easily be applied to love, spirituality and awakening seen in the lyrics: " You came searching for me - I called You - Your voice lifted my eyes . . ." and also in the ballad, "three hearts", "Three hearts that I have seen . . . that's three times blessed that I have been."

The song, "hey, you, yeah you" is reminiscent of the 50' s beat generation poetically. Musically, it brings you back to the 70's when rock operas were birthed. The difference here is Tom adds a folk acoustic style to the mix that is raw and fresh.

Tom has been performing for over eight years in Australia, has had airplay on independent and college radio stations across the United States and Canada. This CD is a direct result of experience, talent and perseverance. The diversity of guitars embodies folk, rock, orchestra and harmony. Lyrically, this is a poetic masterpiece.

Considering the various media outlets we have in Western New York, this is a huge accomplishment, especially for an entertainer. After speaking with Lance for several hours, it became apparent his career and focus is barely midstream. Imagine calling into WJYE on Saturday and telling him exactly what you would like to see him doing? How amazing would it be for the people of Western New York to do just that.

I am going to call the station this Saturday and am asking you to do the same. If only to get a glimpse of what I have, if only to speak to him about your own focus, most importantly to pay homage to a man who has not only entertained Western New York, but the entire world. It is time for us to give back to Lance.

One Love One Community: Musical Tribute Flight 3407

On Friday, April 24, (5pm - 9pm) and Saturday, April 25 (12 noon - 9pm), The Clarence Barnes and Noble will be hosting a 2 day musical tribute in honor of the victims and people involved with Flight 3407. Various local performers are featured including: Geno McManus, Pirate Dreams, Mike Vargovich, John Kloberdanz, Laurie Bordonaro, Peanut Brittle Satellite, Standard of Living, Terry Sulllivan and others.

When speaking with Chuck Schultz, Music Manager for The Clarence Barnes and Noble, we talked of Western New York, the City of Buffalo and the Town of Clarence and how all were affected by this turn of events. Everyone becomes troubled when a situation as this occurs that are often overlooked, such as: fireman, EMT's, police, town government officials, and most importantly, the people living in Clarence and those directly associated with people on the plane. "Hurricane Katrina affected me immensely", stated Chuck, "yet I admired how the musicians came together to rebuild. Music is my passion, when it comes down to it, the times we are going through; we come back to music in the end."

This performance involves local musicians giving their time and energy to turn a negative into a positive. Barnes and Noble in Clarence is the only current location that hosts musical events. Chuck Schulz decided to pull this together after assessing the location of the store and proximity of the tragedy, how it could have been a much worse situation considering and felt blessed to be able to provide in a time when people are in need. Chuck stated, "Giving back to the City, Western New York and the community shaped who I am."

2008 Buffalo Music Hall of Fame 25th Anniversary Induction

On October 9, 2008, the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame held it's 25th Anniversary Induction Ceremony at the Tralf in downtown Buffalo. I had the pleasure of covering this event to further promote the talent that is thriving in our city. This years inductees were as follows: Ed Bentley, Bob James, Richard Kermode, Jerry Livingston, Tom Reinhardt, Joe Rozler, The Schulz Family (Dave, Gretchen and Robert), Joanie Sommers, Jimmy Sacca, Mack Luchey, Anthony Marchese and Richard Sargent.

Access Think Twice Radio to listen to the first ever live performance of the Schulz Family (Bob, Gretchen and Dave, along with Joe Rozler and Jerry Livingston), all 2008 Inductees. Gretchen honored 2008 Inductees Joanie Sommers and Richard Kermode by flawlessly performing "Johnny Get Angry" and "Cry Baby."

I spoke with Van Taylor of Van Taylor Production and Taylor Made Jazz who performed during the VIP ceremonies, as well as interviews with Ritchie Derwald and Doug Morgano, (who regularly plays with Gretchen Schulz), all three of them current Board Members, as well as entertainers.

The Hutch Tech Jazz Combo was chosen this year to compliment the event. I was honored to speak with Musical Director, Ben Boyar and three students, Jacob Jay, Dalton Sharp and Samantha Peplowski. After catching Joe Rozler and Celia White, Lance Diamond took the stage and got the crowd going. One of the most honorable moments was speaking with Mack Luchey of Doris Records located at: 286 East Ferry St, Buffalo 883-2410, a staple of Buffalo's entertainment scene since the early 60's.

Shortly after, Van Taylor inducted Jerry Livingston, quite possibly the most amazing bass player I have witnessed in this region. One of the most compelling interviews was with Frances Scharett, a 2003 Inductee who was a part of the Vaudeville scene in the 40's. Doug Ruffin, (a 2004 Inductee) of WUFO and Urban Legacy Filmworks spoke on behalf of Matt Luchey, followed by Joe Rozler's Induction speech, then a duo performance with Jerry Livingston.

The Buffalo Music Hall of Fame was founded in 1983 to recognize groups and individuals who have had a significant impact on the WNY music scene and/or achieved success in the music industry on a national and often an international scale.

Buffalo's Own: America's Got Talent

(Buffalo, NY) On March 15, 2009, classically trained pianist Lenny Revell, arrived in New York City to perform for NBC's "America's Got Talent." Revell was invited to first round auditions at The Jakob K. Javits Convention Center on 35th Street and 11th Ave. Upon checking in, Mr. Revell met with Riverworks Records before his scheduled performance.

Asked to play only cover songs for the audition, Revell tanked out Jerry Lee Lewis' "Great Balls of Fire" followed by Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" gaining the respect of three ancillary judges present. After discussing venues in Buffalo, Lenny was introduced to the President of Zero Burn Records, Buffy Rouse.

"I am excited to travel and take a chance with my music", said Revell. "Performers often have to step outside the box, you never know who you will meet or where a simple connection may lead." When asked about his chances appearing on TV, Revell said, "That is not my end goal, I hope I make it but the people and producers I met while in NYC are invaluable resources."

"America's Got Talent" is a hit summer series premiering its third season on NBC in June on Tuesdays. Presented by "American Idol'" producers, "America's Got Talent" showcases performers at the forefront of American culture presided by judges David Hasselhoff, Sharon Osbourne and Piers Morgan.

Simon Cowell's SYCO Television, Cecile Frot-Coutaz ("American Idol"), Georgie Hurford-Jones ("Britain's Got Talent"), Jason Raff ("Clash of the Choirs") and James Sunderland ("Dancing on Ice") are executive producers.

Concert From The Heart: Working Together To Make A Difference

Van Taylor, legendary musician, Armed Forces Entertainment and Educator in Music Business, has traveled globally for over 25 years entertaining the troops. During his trips, he has witnessed hunger and homelessness first hand on a grand scale. Since the economic downturn in Western New York, Mr. Taylor has seen more problems with people going with less or nothing in his own backyard of Buffalo, New York.

Van approached Michael Billoni, Director of Public Relations for The Food Bank of Western New York and Ron Daniels, President of The American Federation of Musicians Local # 92, with his vision to create a concert of local musicians performing with The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Van wished proceeds to benefit The Food Bank of Western New York and The Buffalo City Mission: Two organizational staples that contribute to many smaller organizations in Western New York. Upon approval from all involved, Van quickly put together a team of professionals to promote and perform in order to see his dream come to fruition. This became, "Concert From The Heart."

Van Taylor is a tireless supporter of arts, education, awareness and most importantly, ending world hunger. He produced a CD entitled, "The Hunger Project", where all proceeds go directly to The Hunger Project, an organization currently fighting Global World Hunger.

The British Broadcasting Corporation will do a LIVE interview on the evening of March 17, 2009 from Buffalo, New York to the entire world on World Today BBC. Nina Robinson, multi-platform for the BBC, wishes to interview Michael Billoni and George Scott, President of The Historic Colored Musicians Club, who is performing that night with The George Scott Big Band. Nina requested music during the broadcast and Van Taylor's original, "A Nice Day" from "The Hunger Project" CD is going to be aired LIVE during that interview.

Van conceptualized one form of sponsorship: Angel Sponsors. An individual or company able to purchase tickets and donate them for people who cannot afford to attend. This aids in getting people to Kleinhans, it helps a child attend a beautiful concert, it opens doors to art, music, all genres, to community and culture. The proceeds from this event also go towards an Erie County High School music scholarship. In addition to helping organizations, this event is helping children realize a dream otherwise out of reach. A team of hardworking people, living and working in Western New York, have been going non-stop in order to make this a complete success.

This is an historic event and it has never occurred in Western New York and the fact that The BBC is taking notice is immense. Buffalo will be put out to the world in such a positive light. We are the "City of Good Neighbors." Finally, the world will get a chance to see that.

Today, tomorrow and in the coming months, if there is no support for The Buffalo City Mission and The Food Bank of Western New York, there will be no places to go to in order to feed or clothe people. This is a fact. It is due to the support of both organizations that pantries, churches, soup kitchens, and community centers are able to get assistance. This is a time for all of us to help each other. It is a time of great change. Today is a time for us to work together to make a difference. An Interview with The BBC: Nina Robinson (UK)

While in the process of e-commissioning my radio show for the BBC, I came across a feature on the website entitled, "Your Story." In 2008, I was speaking with a United States Army soldier from Buffalo stationed in Iraq and I had wished to tell his story. I emailed the synopsis through the website and Nina Robinson emailed me back. I kept in contact with Nina and decided to send her press I had written regarding "Concert From The Heart."

The British Broadcasting Corporation became interested in the vision behind the entire event. On March 17, 2009, a presenter from World Today Radio will be interviewing two representatives involved in this venture. After speaking with Nina, multi-media platform for World Radio BBC, she described to me her focus behind The BBC's decision to concentrate on Buffalo.

"The BBC World Service's Today programme is interested in talking with George Scott, President of The Historic Colored Musicians Club and Michael J. Billoni, Director of Public Relations for The Food Bank of Western New York, said Nina Robinson. "We will be talking to them LIVE on the evening of March 17, 2009. This music event in New York brings together musicians from different walks of life - jazz, classical, even street (B Boys) - all for the purpose of helping the poor in tough economic times. It's like music healing rifts."

Nina concluded by saying, " We would like to hear a burst of music and talk about why music from across the divides have teamed together with charity - to find out why they've come together and what they can achieve with this collaboration and whether it's a sign of a new era - Obama's America?"

I am pleased to say that the music being introduced during this live broadcast will be Van Taylor's, Taylor Made Jazz original, "Sit Back" along with The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. This concert is the first of its kind in Western New York joining classes of all people, musicians and organizations. The Old School B Boys: A Closer Look (New York)

The Old School B Boys (B for Butler Avenue) have been an R&B group since March of 1999. They have been invited to Rochester, New York and events such as: Juneteenth Festival of Buffalo, The Annual Pine Grille Reunion, The Taste of Buffalo, M&T Bank Concert Series and televised on Time Warner's "Crossroads." They have had the fortune of opening up for National acts such as: The Manhattans, The Delfonics, Goodman and Brown and Roy Ayers.

The Old School B Boys are:

Marcus Brown: Bass vocalist from Buffalo, New York. Marcus began in 1962 with church and R&B groups. Performances include: The Tennessee State Chapel Choir, The Omnipotent's and The Elegants. Marcus earned his B.A. Degree from the University at Buffalo and his Master's from Buffalo State College.

Allen Carrier: lead and first tenor, Allen began his musical career in 1968 with the Soul Searches, The Premiers, The Fabulous Innervisions and The Uncle Funk Klan. Allen has his Associates Voice Major Degree from Villa Maria College in Western New York.

Duane Madyun: Duane began his love for singing in 1965. His baritone voice brings a soulful sound to the musical background of the group. Duane sang with The Four Flames in the 60's and has enjoyed R&B for nearly 40 years. Duane is the owner of a Financial Service Company and resides in Buffalo, New York.

Chalma Warmley: lead and second tenor with over 40 years musical experience, Chalma sang with The Tennessee State Chapel Choir. The highlight of his musical career was an opportunity to play drums with R&B singer, Shirley Brown and blues extraordinaire, Chic Willis. Mr. Warmley teaches the basic rudiments of percussion to youth daily at The African Culture Center in Buffalo.

Chauncey Northington: with a fantastic voice, Chauncey is a wonderful addition and the youngest member of the group. Chauncey has performed with various artists and hails from a strong musical background.
